Are you looking for a project for your early finishers? The students who could use a little extra push? Or maybe an activity to help a student build their confidence in reading aloud? Then keep reading!
I worked with the librarians in two of my buildings to have students create their own read-aloud videos to share with younger students. These students were 5th graders; however, I think that this could be appropriate for 3rd and 4th graders as well! Students simply picked their book, practiced reading it, and then recorded! Some got fancy with details and animations in Canva or Keynote, while some stuck with just using the camera—it was totally up to them!
Once finished, the students exported their work as a video and shared it with the librarians. These videos were then shared in several ways. QR codes were made and put inside the books that they read. This allowed kids to listen along on their iPads while following along with the book. In addition to that, the folder of finished videos was shared with teachers so they could place the QR codes in their classroom libraries for students to explore during independent reading time.
This was a big hit and allowed our 5th graders to leave a legacy at their elementary schools before heading off to middle school. I look forward to doing this project again in the fall!
Below is an example of a poster I made to model what students would be making.
