Creating an Interactive English Storybook with Keynote and Pages

From Keynote to EPUB: Creating an Interactive Storybook for Year 1 English

One of the best ways to engage young learners is through digital storytelling.

For this resource, I designed all of the storybook illustrations in Keynote, allowing me to create colourful scenes that are simple and visually appealing for Year 1 pupils. The completed pages were then arranged and formatted in Pages before being exported as an EPUB digital book for use on iPad.

This workflow demonstrates how Apple's creativity tools can work together to produce interactive learning resources that are easy to share and enjoyable for young learners.

The story introduces the emotion "Happy" using simple repetitive sentences and colourful illustrations to support early English literacy.

Workflow

Keynote

  • Designed all illustrations and page layouts.
  • Created colourful learning visuals suitable for young learners.

⬇️

Pages

  • Compiled the storybook.
  • Arranged the pages.
  • Added text and formatting.

⬇️

Export as EPUB

  • Produced a digital storybook that can be read on iPad using Apple Books.

Classroom Activity

Step 1 – Read

Students read the digital storybook together.

Step 2 – Discuss

Ask questions such as:

  • What makes you happy?
  • When do you feel happy?

Step 3 – Speak

Students describe pictures using simple English sentences.

Step 4 – Create

Students create another page showing something that makes them happy using Keynote.

Why This Lesson Works

This activity combines storytelling, visual learning and creativity using Apple's built-in productivity tools.

By creating the illustrations in Keynote and publishing the book in Pages as an EPUB, teachers can easily produce reusable digital books that support reading, speaking and vocabulary development.

The same workflow can be adapted for any English topic or other primary school subjects.
