Building Malaysia's Iconic Skyscrapers with Apple Keynote
Sometimes, the best way to develop creativity is by giving students simple design challenges.
In this lesson, students recreate one of Malaysia's iconic skyscrapers using only the built-in Shapes, Lines, Text, and Colour Fill tools in Apple Keynote. Rather than tracing or importing images, students carefully observe architectural details and use geometric shapes to construct their own digital illustration.
This activity strengthens visual thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and digital design skills while introducing students to Malaysian architecture and landmarks.
The lesson follows the Everyone Can Create philosophy by encouraging students to create, reflect, and communicate through design.
Subject
Design and Technology / Visual Arts Communication
Level
Secondary School (Form 1–3)
Theme
Digital Design and Creative Expression
Content Standard
Students apply digital design principles to communicate ideas creatively using digital tools.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify the architectural features of a Malaysian skyscraper.
- Use Keynote shapes and drawing tools to recreate a building digitally.
- Apply design principles such as proportion, symmetry, alignment, and colour.
- Demonstrate creativity through digital illustration.
- Present and explain the design choices made during the activity.
Success Criteria
Students can:
- Create a skyscraper illustration using only Keynote tools.
- Combine multiple shapes accurately.
- Demonstrate neat alignment and proportion.
- Explain the architectural features of the chosen building.
- Present their completed design confidently.
Learning Outcomes
Students develop:
- Creativity
- Design Thinking
- Observation Skills
- Digital Literacy
- Visual Communication
- Problem Solving
- Presentation Skills
Resources
- iPad or MacBook
- Apple Keynote
- Images of Malaysian skyscrapers (Teacher reference)
Suggested Iconic Buildings:
- Merdeka 118
- Petronas Twin Towers
- Exchange 106
- Kuala Lumpur Tower (optional challenge)
Step/Lesson Flow Plan
Step 1: Engage (10 minutes)
Begin by showing photographs of several famous Malaysian skyscrapers.
Ask students:
- Which building do you recognise?
- What makes this building unique?
- Which shapes can you identify?
- How do architects combine simple shapes to create complex buildings?
Introduce today's challenge:
"Can you recreate an iconic Malaysian skyscraper using only Apple Keynote shapes?"
Step 2: Explain (15 minutes)
Student will explain why they choose the skyscraper.
Demonstrate how to use Keynote:
- Insert Shapes
- Resize and Rotate
- Duplicate Objects
- Align and Distribute
- Layer Shapes
- Edit Colours
- Remove Shape Borders
- Group Objects
Explain how simple rectangles, triangles, circles and lines can be combined to produce detailed architectural illustrations.
Teacher models the beginning of one skyscraper design.
Step 3: Explore (15 minutes)
Students choose one skyscraper. They observe carefully and identify:
- Main body
- Roof design
- Windows
- Structural patterns
- Colours
- Decorative features
Students begin constructing their building using only Keynote shapes. Teacher circulates to provide guidance.
Step 4: Elaborate (20 minutes)
Students continue refining their illustrations. They may:
- Add a sky background
- Include trees or surrounding buildings
- Add the building name
- Include the city location
- Add a Malaysian flag
- Experiment with gradients and transparency
Early finishers may recreate the next landmark.
Step 5: Evaluate (10 minutes)
Students present their artwork.
Each student explains:
- Which skyscraper they selected
- Why they chose it
- Which Keynote tools were used
- The biggest design challenge they faced
- One new digital design skill they learned
Student can create mov. Classmates provide positive feedback.
Why This Lesson Works
This lesson demonstrates that Apple Keynote is much more than a presentation app—it is also a powerful creative design tool.
By recreating famous Malaysian skyscrapers, students strengthen observation, spatial awareness, and digital design skills while developing an appreciation for architecture and national landmarks. The activity encourages experimentation, persistence, and creative problem-solving, showing that complex illustrations can be built from simple shapes.
The lesson also aligns with Apple's Everyone Can Create framework by empowering students to express ideas visually, communicate their thinking, and share their creations with others.
How have you used simple design tools to encourage creativity in your classroom?
I'd love to hear how your students use Apple Keynote to create original digital artwork and celebrate the places and landmarks that inspire them.
