Snap, Describe & Speak is a Year 6 speaking activity designed to help pupils make meaningful connections between a person’s actions and personality. Instead of learning personality adjectives in isolation, pupils first observe what a person is doing and use the action as a clue to describe what the person is like.
The lesson follows the 5E instructional model, gradually moving pupils from guided activities towards more independent speaking. Pupils begin by observing pictures and identifying actions and personality traits. They then explore the connection between the two before learning how an action can provide clues about a person’s personality.
In the main activity, pupils work with a partner to snap a photo of someone performing an action. They insert the photo into Pages, write two simple sentences — one describing the action and another describing the personality — and record themselves saying the sentences. This allows pupils to combine photography, writing and speaking in one learning task.
To complete the learning cycle, pupils exchange their work with another pair, listen to each other’s recordings and provide peer feedback using Two Stars and a Wish. Feedback can be written or recorded directly in Pages.
Through this activity, the iPad is not simply used to present content. It becomes a tool for pupils to observe, create, speak, listen, reflect and respond to one another, while developing their confidence in describing people in English.
