Description
The Magic Suitcase is a digital English language learning resource designed for Year 2 pupils aged 8. It introduces and reinforces vocabulary related to clothing through an interactive and playful learning experience.
The resource consists of two complementary materials created using Keynote and Pages. The Keynote presentation provides the main teaching and interactive learning experience, while the Pages workbook allows pupils to practise, consolidate and demonstrate their understanding.
The lesson introduces 10 clothing-related vocabulary items through pictures, audio, guessing activities, matching and listening tasks. The use of a “magic suitcase” theme provides a simple story-like context that encourages pupils to predict, explore and recall new words.
The lesson is structured according to the 5E instructional model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate.
5E Learning Sequence
1. ENGAGE – Guess What’s in the Magic Suitcase?
The lesson begins by introducing a magical suitcase and inviting pupils to guess what might be inside. This creates curiosity and activates pupils' existing knowledge of clothing.
Pupils look at the visual clues and participate in the guessing activity before the vocabulary is explicitly introduced.
Purpose:
To capture pupils' attention, activate prior knowledge and create curiosity about the topic.
2. EXPLORE – Clothes Detective
Pupils work in pairs and explore the clothing vocabulary through an interactive matching activity. They look at pictures and drag the appropriate clothing labels to the corresponding images.
This allows pupils to investigate the vocabulary and make connections between the written words and visual representations before receiving direct explanation from the teacher.
The Keynote resource specifically uses a pair-work “Clothes Detective” activity in which pupils match labels to pictures.
Purpose:
To encourage active participation, collaboration and discovery of vocabulary.
3. EXPLAIN – The Magic Dictionary
The teacher introduces the vocabulary systematically using the Magic Dictionary. Pupils listen to the audio while looking at the pictures and words.
The teacher then checks pupils' pronunciation and understanding of the vocabulary. Pupils revisit the answers from the previous activity and practise recalling the words.
The presentation includes a picture dictionary with audio and teacher checking of pronunciation and understanding.
Purpose:
To provide clear input, pronunciation modelling and meaning for the new vocabulary.
4. ELABORATE – Can You Recall the Words?
Pupils apply the vocabulary they have learned in new situations rather than simply repeating the words.
Using the Pages workbook, pupils complete activities such as looking at pictures and writing the correct clothing words. They also revisit and apply the vocabulary through listening activities.
The workbook includes picture-labelling, vocabulary recall and listening tasks.
The teacher can extend the learning by asking pupils to use the vocabulary to talk about clothing, for example:
“I am wearing a shirt and trousers.”
This stage allows pupils to transfer the vocabulary from recognition to meaningful use.
Purpose:
To reinforce learning and encourage pupils to apply the vocabulary independently in a different context.
5. EVALUATE – Listen, Circle and Show What You Know
Pupils demonstrate their understanding through listening and vocabulary recognition activities.
In the workbook, pupils listen and circle the correct pictures and then listen and circle the correct words.
The teacher can use these activities to assess whether pupils can recognise the spoken vocabulary and connect it to the correct picture or written word.
The lesson concludes with simple “I can” statements:
I can name clothes.
I can listen and circle the pictures and words.
I can say what I am wearing.
Purpose:
To assess pupils' understanding of the vocabulary and their ability to listen, recognise and use the target language.
