Bringing Chinese Stories to Life with Keynote
How can we turn a traditional Chinese reading lesson into a meaningful and engaging learning experience?
As an educator and IPG lecturer in Malaysia, I believe that storytelling can help young learners connect language with imagination, emotions and real-life values.
I created a 70-slide Keynote learning resource based on The Flower-Antlered Deer (花角鹿), a Chinese story that explores friendship, kindness and empathy.
What can pupils learn?
Through this resource, pupils can:
- Recognise Chinese vocabulary with the support of Pinyin and illustrations.
- Develop listening, speaking and reading skills through guided storytelling.
- Strengthen comprehension by responding to questions about the characters and events.
- Reflect on the importance of friendship, kindness and helping others.
How is Keynote used?
Keynote brings together colourful illustrations, Chinese characters, Pinyin, guided reading and comprehension activities in one structured presentation.
Rather than presenting vocabulary as isolated words, the story provides a meaningful context for pupils to understand and use language.
Teachers can pause at different stages to ask pupils to predict what happens next, describe characters, read aloud or discuss the values presented in the story.
How can other educators use this resource?
Teachers can adapt this approach by:
- Selecting an age-appropriate story.
- Introducing key vocabulary with visual support.
- Guiding pupils through the story using Keynote.
- Including reading and comprehension questions.
- Encouraging pupils to reflect on the story's message.
The same approach can also be adapted for other languages and reading materials.
My Reflection
Creating this resource reminded me that meaningful technology integration is not simply about designing attractive slides.
It is about using digital tools purposefully to help pupils understand, communicate and connect with what they learn.
I hope this resource inspires more educators to explore creative storytelling in their classrooms.
A question for fellow educators:
How do you use Keynote or other Apple tools to make language learning more interactive and meaningful?
