The Power of Podcasting in Primary School

This year I have run an extra curricular podcast club at my school. We are a three-form entry primary school in Manchester and have never done anything like this before! Aside from being an avid podcast listener, I had no idea where to start, but thanks to reading lots of posts on here and watching many videos of others' experiences, I gathered any keen Year 6s together, and we gave it a go!

The children entirely led the way; they chose the topics, decided what they were going to say, created interview segments and gameshows, made the accompanying music on GarageBand, recorded all the content on iPads and with a little bit of editing help from me, we were ready to release Episode 1.

It was fabulous to see children, who may not have had many other interests or be confident in the general classroom setting, come alive as interviewers, music makers, editors, broadcasters. Children in other year groups were clamouring to be interviewed and the Year 6s are so proud of how they have been able to share their school life with the school community. After hearing the first episode, a very shy Year 6 girl told me that this was the best thing she has ever done at school.

We can't wait to release more episodes!

This is great! Would love to know what platforms you chose for sharing the finished podcasts?

Hi thanks for commenting!

We have shared it publicly here on youtube:

The children created the artwork for the cover picture using pages and sketches apps. We are looking at sharing via the podcast app at the moment, too!

Thanks so much for sharing your success with GarageBand and podcasting in your learning environment. You said it best, “It was fabulous to see children, who may not have had many other interests or be confident in the general classroom setting, come alive as interviewers, music makers, editors, broadcasters.”

Can't wait to hear about more episodes! 🎙🎛🖤

I love your story - what great encouragement for other educators to try podcasting - children will lead the way!

It reminded me of a post by Felecity who also inspires with her story of Podcasting in the Classroom.

Thanks for sharing such an amazing experience with the Community! Podcasting is becoming a hotter project category at schools all over the country. I really like how you built into this experience the principles of Project-Based Learning, including championing student voice and choice, breaking the project into chunks, and sharing with an authentic audience!
