Mastering the Cosmos: A journey into Planet Design Through Student-Centered AI Learning

Simon Heyting (Year 5 Teacher at Floreat Park Primary School) shares his experience using AI in his Year 5 classroom with 1:1 iPads at the #WATechTalk. Simon shared how he created a Report Writing unit linked to Space Sciences. The students had to research the elements of planets (e.g. atmosphere) and write a report about a plant they had created themselves. The reports were written into Pages App using the Report Template. The information from the students reports were then copied into Fusion Brain AI so they could better visualise their created planet. Along with teacher feedback (from 1:1 student conferencing and Magic School AI), the students proofed and rewrote their Information Reports. They key takeaway from Simon’s presentation: Today, as we teach, a large-scale shift is happening at a much faster pace than we expect and there’s no stopping it. Our students are already using AI at home, so we have a choice: stick our heads in the sand and hope for the best, or make the nest use of the amazing innovation at our fingertips and teach our students to use it responsibly and ethically.

Thanks for sharing these slides! I think the student feedback is really interesting, and I agree that educators have a new responsibility to help students learn to use AI tools in responsible and ethical ways that inspire creativity and critical thinking. This lesson idea is a great example of how that might look.
