The Canadian Apple Distinguished Educator Academy was held in the province of Quebec this summer. The location was a secluded and swanky (and a bit scary) 1930’s log cabin resort. Not just any log cabin however. The largest log cabin in North American made from over 10,000 cedar logs shipped to Quebec from BC. It had all the charm (and nightmarish secret rooms) that you’d expect from such a heritage property. The most charming (and nightmarish for resort staff) aspects of the property this week however were the ADEs who assembled to grow in three key areas. Leadership, Storytelling, and Creativity represented the focal points of an otherwise choose-your-own-adventure professional development summit.
Personally this event coincided with the exact 7th anniversary of my life as an ADE. Do the math quickly and you’ll find the answer is “The Best Class Ever!” I loved seeing the mix of the ancient and wise ADEs who have been in the community since before the invention of the iPhone, and those who are brand new and skyrocketing up the innovation achievement ladder. We got loud (sometimes way too loud), we got vulnerable, and we got pains in our sides from laughing again and again.
The reason I feel the ADE and Apple Teacher programs are so important to a company I’ve loved since I could barely walk is because they spotlight and cherish the human side of an otherwise giant technology company. Apple has always been about storytelling and creativity and this not-so-secret society (who sometimes meet in the weird stone basements of immense log structures) is the story that Apple should tell year after year. These programs are the stories that Apple has helped to write and the characters are priceless in every way.
