This past year, much of my work has centred around integrating AI into my subject and department area. But as the school year came to a close, I embarked on one last project—something personal and close to my heart. Every summer, my granddaughter stays with us for a week. It’s a cherished tradition where we explore the stunning landscapes and attractions of our area, from the pristine beaches of Pembrokeshire to the magical Castle Coch.
Typically, we capture these moments in photographs, and at the end of the week, we print them into a photo album. But this year, I wanted to take things a step further by using the power of AI to make our memories even more special. The plan? To create a personalised storybook of our adventures, narrated from my granddaughter’s perspective.
Developing the Story with AI
Each evening, after a day of exploration, we’d sit down and recount her favourite moments from the day. We recorded her thoughts and highlights, capturing the joy of a seven-year-old’s excitement and wonder. At the end of the week, we took her reflections and entered them into ChatGPT, asking it to create a bedtime story tailored for a child her age.
The results were beyond our expectations. The AI-generated story not only captured her experiences but also wove them into a magical narrative she could proudly call her own. Reading the stories together, my granddaughter relived the best moments of her trip, smiling and laughing at the playful retelling of our adventures(especially the ice cream).
With the story written, it was time to bring the visual elements to life. We turned to AI once again, using Bing Image Generator to create illustrations based on the same prompts we used to generate the story. My granddaughter delighted in choosing her favourite image for each story, adding another layer of personalisation to the project.
Now came the final step: compiling everything into a beautiful storybook. For this, we turned to Apple’s Pages, which made it incredibly easy to design each page. We effortlessly combined the text and images, setting backgrounds that matched the tone of each part of the story. Pages allowed us to place our content exactly where we wanted, and in no time, we had a polished, digital version of our book.
But we didn’t stop there. We wanted a physical keepsake—a book we could hold in our hands and cherish for years. After exporting each page from Pages as a high-quality image, we uploaded them to an online photo book service, and within a short time, we had a professionally printed book in our hands.
The entire process—from brainstorming with AI to producing a tangible book—was a delightful experience, made even more special by sharing it with my granddaughter. It was heartwarming to see how technology and creativity merged to create something that was not just about our adventures, but also about the memories we created together.
