Math Notes + Apple Pencil = ❤️
My math teacher heart is so happy with the update of Math Notes in iPadOS 18. Now, you can write equations of functions, see them graphed, adjust the values, and watch what happens, all within Math Notes. And, this is only the beginning of the power of this tool.
Note Taking Becomes Dynamic
I'm envisioning dynamic, interactive notes in math class, rather than static ones. I'm picturing the students playing an all new role in the lesson process as they move from consumers to producers of information.
Before you leverage this tool with students, I encourage you to dive in and explore yourself as a learner. But, don't worry about becoming an expert yet, because there is such value in giving your students that trial-and-error opportunity, too.
A great first experience with graphing in Math Notes is to write a function in the form of y = x + a, change the value of the variable a, and watch as this is reflected in the graph.
How to Use Math Notes to Explore Transformation of Linear Functions
- Go to the Calculator app on your iPad.
- Tap the calculator in the bottom left and select Math Notes..
- Use your Apple Pencil to write a=5, then y=x+a.
- Tap Insert Graph.
- Tap on the 5 and scroll through other values for this variable. Watch how this impacts the graph.
Only the Beginning
This exploration is only the beginning of what you can do with Math Notes. Imagine the wonderings your students will share as they reframe, zoom in and out, recolor, and view the coordinates of the graph.

I love this idea for exploration transformations of functions! Thanks for sharing! I will be adding this to my lectures for the future. After exploring the transformations with math notes, we can create a GIF using Magic Move.
