Student Led Math: Letting 8th Graders Take the Reins

Fellow educators, I'm excited to share a project I'm implementing with my 8th-grade math students that fosters both deep learning and creative expression. We'll be concluding our year with a student-led teaching initiative where each student designs and presents a lesson on their favorite math concept covered throughout the year. To increase engagement and interactivity, students will utilize digital presentation tools like Book Creator, Canva, or Keynote to craft their lessons. These lessons must include a clear explanation of the chosen topic, illustrative examples, interactive elements such as quizzes or drag-and-drop activities, visual aids, and a "Why this is important" section. This project aims to show student understanding, develop presentation skills, and create a collaborative learning environment where students learn from each other's unique perspectives. I believe this student-centered approach not only reinforces mathematical concepts but also empowers students to take ownership of their learning and discover the joy of teaching. I encourage you to consider similar projects in your classrooms to foster deeper understanding and ignite a passion for learning.

Such a great idea, alokanc!

Giving students ownership and autonomy over how and what they learn can lead to fantastic outcomes!

Best of luck with it. I’m sure it will be a great learning experience for your students!
