Member Made Media: Replacing Hold Music With Youth Voice

Creating a Custom Hold Message with iMovie - A Simple, Impactful Project Using iPad & MacBook

Have you ever been stuck on hold, listening to the worst music?

We've all been there - and we knew we could do better.

Hi, everyone!

We recently completed a fun and functional multimedia project I wanted to share with the community!

🎬 The Project:

We wanted something more engaging than standard hold music while callers waited to be connected with Club Staff. So, we created a short audio message with background music and informative audio clips.

💡 Member Made:

One of the most rewarding parts of this project is that it was entirely youth-driven! Our members:

  • Wrote the script themselves
  • Chose who would speak and what tone they wanted to set
  • Recorded the audio and helped with the video editing process

A Club member sitting behind a MacBook with a microphone in front of them. iPad in view, recording their audio.

This not only gave them ownership of the project, but also helped build their confidence, communication skills, and digital literacy. It was an authentic way for them to use their voice and creativity in a real-world context.

💻 Tools Used:

  • Apogee Mic+: High-Quality Audio Clips (but the built-in Mic would work just fine!)
  • iMovie for iPad: Audio Recording & Quick, touch-based editing of clips.
  • iMovie for Mac: Fine-tuning audio, Audio Clipping and balancing, and audio-only exporting.
  • Photos, music, and Keynote slides: Imported for a dynamic visual experience when sharing in other settings.

🛠️ How You Can Use This:

While we are primarily using the audio with our phone system, there are a ton of other ways this project could be used:

  • At open houses or parent nights to keep visitors informed.
  • During virtual meetings or livestreamed events.
  • In the program space or classroom, as a smooth way to transition between activities.
  • At student showcases or assemblies as a visual (if you include slides or pictures) or audio welcome or intermission.

Would love to hear if anyone else is using iMovie (or other Apple tools) in creative ways to enhance communication in your school or program!

Emily - what a cool idea! Not only fun but an authentic activity for learners. Thanks for the detail and story.

Thank you! It was a lot of fun to create! The best part was crowding around our Boys & Girls Club's landline to listen when our IT Manager called to say it had been uploaded. I wish I had snapped a picture!
