@Dragon_Coach and I met at ADE institute in 2023 and have been working on compiling lessons for high school teachers using MacBooks or iPads in class. @Dragon_Coach uses MacBooks, and I use iPads, and in our collaboration, we realized that small adjustments can be made to apply the lessons in each environment. Over the next 30 days, we’ll post one lesson idea each day with tips on how to make it work in either environment you are teaching in.
High School Learning with Apple #25: Sound Effects Challenge
Where are our Theater teachers at? This lesson is for you! Part of Theater is learning all about the pieces that are part of a great production from set design to lighting and sound effects. This lesson focuses in on sound effects
The Sound Effects Challenge starts with a conversation about how sound can make a big difference in stories. Students share examples of cool sound design in movies and plays, and we learn about some important sound design principles like where the sound comes from, what it sounds like, how high or low it is, and how loud it is.
In this lesson, students will use GarageBand Sound sampler to record some sounds, edit them, and add effects like reverb and echo. We have a brainstorming session where everyone comes up with a bunch of different sound effects, from everyday noises like a door creaking to more imaginative sounds like a monster’s roar. The next day, students split into small teams and each team picks a few sound effects to recreate.
Once the sound effect files are ready, each group makes a guessing game video in iMovie using the sound effects they made. On guessing day, the rest of the class plays a game trying to guess the sound effect and what was used to make it.
The lesson ends with a discussion where students talk about what they learned, the challenges they faced, and how they used the techniques they learned.
📣 How could you use GarageBand to ask students to apply their learning?
