In this lesson with Year 2 and 3 students, I used the story The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds to inspire creativity and critical thinking. We started with a simple dot on the screen in the Sketches School app, and the students’ challenge was to turn that dot into something following a theme - monsters, nature, or food.
To keep the focus on experimenting and problem solving, I limited the tools they could use to just three brushes (watercolour, acrylic, and spray paint) and two detail tools (smudge and eraser). This helped the students explore each tool fully without feeling overwhelmed.
The students really engaged with the task and enjoyed the challenge of turning a dot into a complete picture. They practiced the important skills of modifying their work, trying new ideas, and solving problems as they went. It was great to see their creativity and confidence grow, and it was a great way to combine storytelling with digital art and critical thinking.
