Apple’s Image Playground offers an exciting way for teachers and students to generate custom images quickly and easily. Integrated into compatible Apple devices, this tool is available as an app or within Apple applications like Notes, Pages, Keynote, Messages, or Freeform. Image Playground uses AI to create unique visuals based on a photo, theme, and/or prompt. Users can upload a photo or type a phrase, choose a style or template, and watch Image Playground instantly generate an original image. Whether you need a cartoon-style illustration or a artistic sketch, this tool opens up endless possibilities for visual learning and creativity.
Using Image Playground is simple. Most people begin by uploading a photo of themselves to generate a cartoon-style image. The tool will quickly create multiple versions of the face that you can flip through and download or copy/paste. (Note: some images may appear slightly distorted, and teeth in particular can sometimes have odd looking gaps.) Once you have selected your favorite generated image, you can use the presets to customize it with various themes, costumes, accessories, or location backgrounds. When finished, images can be saved, shared, or directly inserted into presentations, class projects, or other creative assignments.
Photos of pets or places can also be uploaded and transformed into animation, illustration, or sketch styles. You also have the option of generating an image from a description rather than a photo. Copyrighted items and inappropriate words are blocked, which makes Image Playground a good AI art option for schools. (Note: Image Playground does best with simpler prompts. Occasionally you will find that you get a message that Image Playground is “unable to use that description.” Also, only square images can be made, which makes it tricky to create an image for a background. If you have used other AI art generators, you may find the creativity options and output more limited.)
Here are 10 ways teachers and students might use Image Playground in the classroom:
- 👤Personal Avatars - Create a cartoon-style portrait that is customized for seasons, events, or specific subjects.
- 🦅Class Mascot Design: Involve students in creating a fun, personalized class mascot image.
- 📝Story Starters: Generate unique images or crazy characters to spark creative or description writing activities.
- 📇 Vocabulary Illustrations: Have students visualize vocabulary by creating custom images representing new words.
- 🧪 Science Diagrams: Produce images to explain scientific concepts.
- 📊 Math Word Problems: Generate themed images to illustrate and add fun to math problems.
- 📖 Book Scene: Allow students to design images that visualize their understanding of a book chapter.
- 🎨 Art Inspiration: Create a unique picture that serves as a reference for paintings, drawings, or other art projects.
- 🖼️ Bulletin Boards: Design images for classroom announcements, holidays, or themed displays for classroom or digital use.
- 🖥️ Presentation and Document Elements: Encourage students to create their own visuals in slideshows or reports instead of relying on online photos.
With Image Playground, teachers can enhance their lessons by adding a layer of personalization and imagination, making learning more engaging and visually appealing. This tool has the potential to transform the way both teachers and students create and communicate in the classroom, making it a valuable resource for learners of all ages.

Thanks Karen for the detail on Image Playground - very helpful!
I also have used Image Playground to anchor Freeform presentations around famous people (or statues) in history. I think they provide a nice visual touch.
