We made a story about a baby dinosaur named Oliver who was afraid to fly using his wings. Every morning his dad called him to go flying, but Oliver never wanted to go because he was so scared. One day, while Oliver was sad in his room, a firefly arrived and wanted to help him. It told him it will help him to make a rocket so he can fly without fear, and Oliver discovered his talent for creating things. So, the next time his dad called him to fly, he happily took off in his rocket.
APPS THAT WE USE:
- The first app we learned to use was "Voice Note." We practiced on our iPads, learning how to press play to record, pause to finish the audio, and delete it if we couldn't get it right, and then try again.
- The second app we used was "Freeform App." Here, we first learned to distinguish the app's colors so we could click on the correct one. Once inside the app, we identified the "elements" icon, which includes figures, animals, objects, etc. We selected three types of dinosaurs, a firefly, and a rocket. The students learned to color them. We showed them that clicking on a figure would bring up a bar with a colored circle. They could click on this circle and select the color they wanted to give their figure.
What students learn:
- Identify application colors
- Identify icons in the apps
- Understand the purpose of Play
- Understand the purpose of Pause
- How to remove a voice note
- Click to select shapes
- How to color shapes in a Freeform app
To finish our project we put the images in the "iMovie app". The students already knew the story so we gave each one a dialogue. When we clicked on the record, they said the words they were given and then clicked on pause.
We showed them our finished digital story, and they were very happy to have completed it and learned new things.
We explained the stories to help us understand that everyone has a hidden talent that can help us achieve what we want.
