I started my journey of technology in the classroom, on an iPad, back when it first came out, and it was a game changer. It totally transformed how I thought about technology as a tool to support learning. The form factor met my needs as an educator to be creative, support accessibility and most importantly (as I taught PE) mobility. Over the years I have seen the device grow in terms of what it can do to truly transform education for ALL learners of all ages, in all subjects.
And now we have the new MacBook Neo, so what does that change?
For me, nothing, because the device itself is the way that students accessed possibilities. There are always times when you need to change how you do things. As a teacher, I used an iPad to teach, but would still use my MacBook to do other tasks that needed that device.
And that's the point, use the right tool, at the right time, for the right task.
That's what makes a difference. Its not about using it because you hit a certain age, i'm in my 40s and still use an iPad so that can't be the rule, but I use it when it makes sense, I also use my MacBook when it makes sense, or when it meets the purpose of what I am doing.
Now with Apple having something more budget friendly for education, it does change things when it comes to device choice. Where the function of the device didn't meet the purpose before and students had to switch to a laptop, it also meant moving platforms, different logins, changing programmes and lots of other things that made technology slow down learning. But now, you can easily move between iPad and MacBook, continue where you left off, access all your content, work on Office365 or Google Workspace, while staying on the Apple devices.
That means more seamless learning, more access to ALL of the platforms a school might want a student to access for future use (Windows, Google AND Apple) less downtime and easier to manage and secure in one Jamf Ecosystem, so its easier for IT admins to deploy, maintain devices and refresh while also keeping students safe on the devices, wherever learning takes place.
Apple just changed the way you look at device choice and access in education, to make sure end users use the right tool to meet their purpose
