Learning Genre with Garageband Loops

Our elementary music teacher recently completed a genre unit with his 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students using Garageband. Students learned about genres in music and how instruments and cultures are reflected in designations of genre. Students worked in groups using their creativity and collaboration to develop an original looping song that reflects their group's genre.

Students then learned about visual storytelling in album art and created their own album cover in Canva that reflected the meaning in their song loop. Album art was then paired with a QR code to create a gallery walk where students listened to their peers work with guiding reflection questions. Students' work was then put up on a hallway wall for parents to enjoy during Family Literacy Night. Students LOVED this project as it was designed to promote student empowerment, creativity and reflection.
