Hi everyone,
At our school, we’ve been having some really exciting discussions about upgrading our Year 5/6 playground. Rather than starting with adult ideas, we wanted to bring the students’ voices into the design process and that’s where Makers Empire has been an incredible tool!
We kicked off the project with a brainstorming session in Freeform, where students collaborated to list what makes a great play space, things like challenge, creativity, inclusivity, and connection. From there, they’ve been using Makers Empire to design their own playground concepts, experimenting with shapes, structures, and materials to bring their ideas to life in 3D.
The project has sparked deep conversations around design thinking, STEM, wellbeing, and student agency. It’s been amazing to see how students balance fun with safety and practicality while thinking about how space encourages different types of play.
I’d love to hear from others:
- Has anyone else used Makers Empire or similar 3D design tools for real-world school projects?
- How have you involved students in redesigning school spaces or play areas?
- Any tips for helping students turn their digital models into feasible designs?

I love this idea! Our elementaries are in the process of upgrading their playgrounds as well! It would be cool to have students use Keynote to make different equipment and then export as PNGs with transparent backgrounds. Then they could build an AR playground with AR Makr! just an idea!
