Zentangle Flag Project- interdisciplinary ideas included.

Good for digital art class & interdisciplinary learning.

My 8th graders used Sketches app to incorporate symbols of our home state Colorado into the state flag design. We used layers to design the Zentangle and the color separate, but using Sketches School fill tool, this could all be done as a single layer.

Great classroom conversation was had among students about symbols and local geography & recreation.

I have only done this with the Colorado Flag as inspiration, but I could see doing this when learning about other cultures & countries. I could see similar projects happening with awareness for causes & special groups.  I would love to see how someone could redesign the Ukrainian flag with designs from that country & culture.

I could see students working on something like this as a get to know you type of project using symbols from their home culture. It would be a natural next step to do some writing about the objects that were chosen to be included and what they represent for the flag.

Great idea and beautiful design. Agree, perfect “get to know you” or understand your state or community assignment requiring learning, research and design!

What a beautiful student work sample! Thank you for sharing this project. As you mentioned in your post, there are so many opportunities for transfer and extension across content areas, particularly in social studies and ELA.
