Physical & Chemical Changes - Penguin Project

This is a two-part project learning about physical & chemical changes.

Part 1 - Physical Change: Students will create "igloos" to protect the penguins from the warmer temperatures. Each student has a $50 budget for supplies and they can create their igloos with those physical supplies if you have them or digitally make them by drawing or using graphics.

Aligned Standard:

PS1-4: Describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a substance.

  • I can identify ways to prevent thermal energy from transferring out of a substance. 
  • I can recognize how energy changes particle movement. 
  • I can create a design to prevent thermal energy from transferring out of a substance.

Part 2 - Chemical Change: Steve has to decide if he wants to be a "hero or villain" by creating a device that will either absorb or release energy through chemical processes. Students will create a gif in Keynote to demonstrate their device and have a choice of product. Students will again be limited to a $50 budget of items to create their devices.

PS1-6 - Designs a device to release or absorb thermal energy by chemical processes

  • I can prevent or add thermal energy into or out of a substance. 
  • I can recognize how energy changes particle movement. 
  • I can design a way to prevent energy transfer through chemical processes.
