Creating Recipes With Process (Logic) in Mind
I may be a little out of my league as a music professor, but I’ve been doing some brainstorming as an Apple Learning Coach. In creating my “Composing With Found Sounds In GarageBand” book, I began thinking about how important it is to be able to consider each individual step in the process of any activity. Thinking logically is a critical skill for our students and for teachers as they plan classroom activities. There are a multitude applications for and modifications of this activity.
That being said, I might be considered a hypocrite because I don’t have step-by-step instructions for this activity. 😆 It’s only an idea that can be further developed and brainstormed to fit your needs.
In preparing a meal, we follow recipes. Those who have created those recipes had to think of each ingredient, the quantity of each, and each step of the process critically as they notated the recipe. Some courses (logic, coding, classroom methods, technical writing, etc.) might benefit from using Freeform to brainstorm and collect thoughts (individually, collaboratively in pairs, or groups) - creating a workflow - and Pages to create and illustrate a recipe card.
To make the activity more of a challenge, the student might create the recipe card in class without any assistance, needing to recall each ingredient and step as a first draft. [The recipe could be as simple as warming up soup, making macaroni and cheese, or microwave popcorn. It doesn’t have to be complex to be effective.] They could then use additional resources to fill in any missing ingredients and steps they had forgotten. The recipe cards could be exchanged with other students who would then follow the recipe of their classmate to actually prepare the food item at home. For a more enjoyable lab experience, select recipes might be made during class time! If they turn out well, the class can enjoy a special treat. 🍿🧇🍜
I am attaching my gazpacho recipe in a Pages format for anyone that might want to either make the soup or use the template - or both! I’m also attaching a video I made in Clips that illustrates the process using video, an alternate approach to this activity.
Again, I’m just a music professor that enjoys cooking and helping others integrate technology trying to brainstorm ideas. Let me know if this spurs any action or lesson plans. I would love to see what you might do with it!

Love the idea of learners considering each step in a process in the form of a recipe - a wonderful way to think logically. I think you are on to something with the recipe idea! The video is great! Thanks for the recipe - I think I’ll try it!
