Thanks Cheryl. My team and I have put together a webpage with other active learning methodologies. I’ll write something at some point this week showing how they can be used with iPads https://sites.google.com/pdst.ie/rebel-primary/practice/active-learning-methodologies?authuser=0

Using Freeform with Active Learning Methodologies.
All children (and me) need focus and guidelines when learning about a new or familiar topic. I frequently use active learning methodologies to guide pupil research.
One of my favourites that can be used easily with technology is Diamond 9. Diamond 9 provides a framework for reordering facts and opens up constructive discussion.
In my example, the children will research the solar system and identify nine facts. I like for the children to open freeform and safari in split screen and to conduct their research this way.
Their Diamond 9 framework then provides the basis for their continuing project.
For differentiation purposes, I sometimes give the children three to four facts, and they add the rest. They can decide to keep or discard my points, and once they have recorded all 9, they start to order them according to importance.
The sticky note aspect of Freeform will allow the children to create and collaborate easily using this methodology.

I can definitely see the Diamond 9 framework being a useful starting point for learners of all ages when they begin exploring a new topic. Thanks for sharing this idea, Catherine, and linking to other resources as well!

Diamond 9 - great framework and not overwhelming to learners as they tackle a new topic or concept. Thanks for sharing your implementation.
