"There's no place like school!" said our Saturn student!

They said it thousands of times to the many visitors whom they helped tour their Saturn School, both onsite and online: Our students made a video that showed new ways to teach and be taught and to learn, and show what they know. It was a lot:

Click on the link below to see their learning story....and it is student stories from start to finish, not the teachers or parents or press. A Student's Professional Learning Plan made by them also led them to mastery of their project and then "showing what they know." Yes, it was plenty!!!

See below, recalling that video back in the late 1980's what was not what it is today: Watch on!

This is their story from script to finish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGLeGWLWNcQ

"There's no place like school!"

Indeed! And an independent expert in school reform, Bob Pearlman, helped tell the whole story. See below:

I truly appreciate the opportunity to tell the story of the St. Paul Schools Saturn School of Tomorrow, 1987 - 1998. President George H. W. Bush visited Saturn School back in 1991 and extolled the unique educational program there: each student created their own Personal Learning Plan.

They created that plan and took responsibility to master the skills cited there. They then showed and shared what they mastered with their parents and advisor. They echoed the words on our video, "There's no place like school." And so it was.

Interesting to see and watch this. I'm wondering the question "So what?" and "What now?" How is this project carrying on or having an impact in other areas?

This project goes back to 1991! It's timeless, really. JJ, thanks for your comments. A student must "own" their own learning, both what they know and what they need to now. It needs writing down, with an action plan in his school with an adviser to help them reach their goals, and "a chance to show what they know and are continuing to grow." Watch the students' video, made by them back then with no help. You'll see a student showing his parents and advisor his progress. To show it is to know it. Press on and lifelong on. It's what we're here for.

JJ, let me know if I can answer any other questions you may have.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, it's an older story to tell, but it's one still worth telling today. The technology and the quality of the video have changed greatly, but the story still stands. As our students sums it up, "There's no place like school!"

Indeed!

Questions and comments are welcome!

How many of you Apple folks out there require a student-managed Personal Learning Plan that indicates their goals and progress and the help they may need and the mastery showings they present? We found that our students enjoyed taking greater responsibility for their learning and showing what they know.

If they can present it properly, they know it well.
