Annotating with ESL students

I have been struggling with how to help my ESL kids comprehend the novel we are reading called Warriors Don't Cry. I teach 11th grade English at John Marshall IT HS and we seem to have a growing number of ESL students who struggle with the language. Our Apple Specialist came in to teach one class and show the kids how to annotate the text using a pdf file, how to navigate the accessibility features and how to work the translate options to help them with comprehension. The kids seemed to respond favorably to the different ways to approach the text and it also allowed for the gradual release of responsibility to them for their learning. I think it will provide for more successful opportunities for them to show each other what they learned or how to go about attacking the text without us having to intervene every time.
