Changing teaching and learning with an MDM?

Like many others, I used to always see an MDM as just a way to manage iPads, but I had my eyes opened recently to the power of using the right MDM to enhance teaching and learning. Like many others, I had seen and briefly used the Jamf apps that come as part of Jamf School. But after a session with Mat Pullen and some time tinkering and exploring, my mind was instantly changed.

Jamf Teacher, Student and Parent app have so many incredible features to aid workflow, scaffold learning and give more control in the classroom and beyond. This is the perfect tool to use alongside Apple Classroom to give you full overview and focus the learning.

There are some key tips I love:

1: using the lessons in Jamf Teacher to eliminate distractions amd focus the learning. Direct pupils to the apps they need and web links you want them to use.

2: using applock to increase focus, improve workflow and eliminate distractions. This is perfect in so many settings, but superb for SEND and EYFS to increase learning time.

3: using groups in Jamf Student to create ways to allow students to access the apps and documents they need easily when they need them.

4: when you create classes in Jamf Teacher it will automatically replicate them in Apple Classroom.

So many more great features which make deployment easy, but more importantly improve teaching and learning!

Thanks for the share on Jamf. Having a robust MDM and knowing how to use all of its capabilities can be so helpful in promoting learning. And I know Mat Pullen is an expert!

I recently deployed Mosyle manager and had the same thoughts. Sure, it manages the iPads but having integration with the Classroom app is super beneficial to keeping students and learning on track.

It makes an incredible difference being able to have that control to guide teaching and learning.

Managing them is great, but managing them with impact is game changing!

Thank you so much for sharing! We were super excited to use Jamf Teacher this year but have run into some issues. Curious if you've seen these things and/or found a solution?

  1. Some students don't release for some reason at the end of a lesson. Randomly, no matter what we do. Teacher tries, we go into Jamf and try, restarts, etc. Nothing releases them until it magically releases them.
  2. If students have used folders to organize, Jamf takes them away.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Jenny -

Thanks for posing the questions above. I've reached out to see if my Jamf colleagues can respond to #1 above. As far as #2, it's not something that any MDM provider can address. We recommend creating a Home Screen Layout for student devices for consistency, but we don't have a solution to protect students' personalized folders and layouts.

Are you still experiencing the 'failure to release' issue?
