Setting up new iPads with a new "policy?"

Question:

My classroom is getting a bunch of new iPads this week or next. We have an outside tech company that remotely manages them through something called Addigy. Right now all of the iPads in the building have the same apps, but these new iPads should only have specific apps on them. The company has told me they have set up a new policy for the iPads which will kick in once I rename the new iPads. However, the iPads automatically enroll in the old policy.

This is from the tech I am dealing with "The one issue I have come across is that when iPads move from one policy to another, apps that were in the old policy but not in the new policy are not uninstalled. Addigy support tells me that that feature is under development. The only solution at the moment would be to manually remove the apps or reset the iPads to factory settings."

I don't have a problem resetting the iPads, but does anyone else see an easier solution? We are finding out that the tech company does not specialize in iPads and I seem to be guiding them through this. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately I don't know the Addigy product at all, but what you're describing might be helped by ensuring that the Apps are set as "Managed" in the initial policy.

Does the MDM have a a method of "unassigning" the app from the devices (which would remove it), rather than just "releasing the license" (https://support.addigy.com/hc/en-us/articles/4403542739475-Releasing-Apps-Books-Licenses)?

The method of "releasing the licenses" is an intentional feature when Apple designed App Assignments - allowing the owner of the iPad to purchase the license themselves in a period after the "release" of the app and for them to retain their own data. However - most MDMs also allow you to explicitly unassign the app from the device - removing the App at the same time.
