GarageBand makes it easy to create high‑quality recordings of your voice or other sounds around you. Record a class brainstorming session, sounds from a school event, or a simple audio journal reflection.

Start a new project. In GarageBand, click New Project and select the Empty Project template, then click Choose.
Choose a track type. Click the Audio track type with the microphone icon.
Verify Input setting. Click Details to expand the window and confirm the text below the Input menu says “My instrument is connected with: MacBook Air Microphone.” (If you’ve connected an external mic, you may need to change the input device. Choose GarageBand , Settings, then click the Audio/MIDI tab.)
Click Create to open the new project containing one microphone track.
Simplify your workspace. Click the Library button and the Smart Controls button to close these areas.
Turn off the metronome. Click the Metronome button and the Count In button .
Record your voice. Click Record and speak into the mic. Click Stop (or press the Space bar) when you’re finished. To listen to your recording, click Go to Beginning , then click Play .
Interview an expert and gather insights on a topic you’re teaching. Place the computer between the subject and the interviewer so questions and answers can be heard clearly in the recording.
Use audio recording to track student progress in reading fluency. Record a student reading a passage, then after the student has practiced a few times, record again and compare the results.
You can improve the sound of your audio recordings and reduce unwanted background noise by recording with a high‑quality external microphone, which you can plug directly into your Mac.
