Automation allows you to easily add dynamics to your recordings by changing settings like volume and reverb over time on each individual track. Record a story that begins with a short musical introduction, and use automation to bring the music volume down as the storyteller begins speaking.
Open the Automation controls. Choose Mix , Show Automation.
Select the parameter you want to automate. An Automation Parameter menu appears in each track header. Use the menu to choose a parameter, such as Volume.
Add automation points. Click anywhere in the track to reveal the automation curve, represented by a colored line. Click anywhere on the line to add an automation point.
Adjust the settings. Drag an automation point up or down to adjust the parameter. Drag an automation point left or right to move it to a different point on the timeline.
Delete an automation point by double‑clicking the point.
Listen to the result. After adjusting automation points in a region, click Go to Beginning , then click Play to hear how the sound changes over time.
Conduct an interview show with background music. Use automation to fade music in and out between segments of the show.
Create a radio drama or PSA, using automation techniques to add reverb or echo to someone’s voice for dramatic effect.
Once you’ve created some automation points and curves, you can copy automation within a track or between tracks.
