Everyone Can Create: Matariki Project with iPad - Recap of Sessions

Everyone Can Create: Matariki Project with iPad was a series of 4 online workshops @Trudi and I delivered that focussed on using creativity apps to enhance and capture our learning around Matariki. In Aotearoa New Zealand we celebrate Matariki during mid-winter. Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars - also known as Pleiades. The rising of these stars signal the start of the Māori New Year.

Over the four workshops we worked towards creating our final outcome, which was a multimedia movie, showcasing our understanding of the Matariki whetu (stars) and the meanings behind them.

In the first workshop Trudi gave us a fabulous introduction to Freeform and we learned how to make a plan for our Matariki Inquiry. We used Freeform to gather information and map out a digital outcome to share our learning with others.

In the second session Trudi showed us how to use a combination of Tayasui Sketches School and Keynote to create a stunning animation of the Matariki star cluster. In Tayasui Sketches School we created beautiful visual representations of each of the stars. We then imported these into Keynote and animated them.

Recap Session 3: Create a soundtrack with GarageBand on iPad

During our third session we went on a journey of discovery inside GarageBand, experimenting with the touch instruments and live loops to create a beautiful soundscape, reflecting our understanding of the meanings behind each of the Matariki stars.

Recap Session 4: Share learning through video with iMovie and Clips

In our final session we pulled all of our content together in with iMovie. iMovie provides the perfect platform for app smashing. App smashing is when you combine the power of more than one app to produce your outcome. This gives students creative freedom and agency in choosing the best tools (apps) for the brief, taking their movie making next level. Our final outcome was a combination of Tayasui Sketches School artwork, Keynote animation, Clips poster titles, iMovie Green Screening, with our GarageBand soundscape.
