Trading Cards to Build Relationships.

Start your year with creativity. Using Keynote, students will create an “About Me” Trading Card.

Back to school means learning about a new set of students and/or reconnecting to others. What better way to meet and engage students than with a creative challenge.

Trading card contains a drawn image of a person, just a headshot. Below are facts about the person.

Using Keynote drawing tools, students will create a portrait or avatar for themselves. Next they will reflect on themselves. What is important to them, what do they love, what are their concerns, what do they want to share? Below is a template to download. It can customized and adjusted include the statistics you feel are most relevant for your students.

5 Steps to create your portrait:

5 Steps with screenshots of how to import an photo, trace the image, add a background and export as a photo.

Once your portrait is complete open the template and insert.

Part Two, the writing: Have students reflect on themselves, using Notes to brainstorm and jot ideas. Then type the text into the template. (Pair and Share for editing)

Finally consider adding shapes or decorative drawings. When complete print and hang or create a digital gallery for students (and teachers) to learn about one another.

Extensions and Connections:

Have students record their story in Keynote, adding it to the template, and export as a video. Collect the whole class and create an iMovie or Clips video. Share with the class, parents and community.

Use this template to create trading cards about anything. The periodic table, each student describes and element, different species or plants, maths facts(pick a number like 7 as the portrait and in the boxes show different ways to get to 7), historical or literary figures, artists or musicians, famous people in your community…

Use this as a creative way for students to show their learning. Please comment with questions or ideas. I can’t wait to hear how you used this in your classroom.

Great idea and really merges learners getting to know each other as school begins with some creative Keynote magic!

Yes and Laurie - super activity, as you said, for historical figures. Students would have fun with the art and be able to pick out what was important to them about the person from history.

Yes and this would be a great activity for my A&P class! I’m thinking trading card muscles, bones, or trading card digestive organs for the digestive system! Thank you for sharing Laurie!
