The Why: with some examples of...

  1. Showcase your learning: You put a lot of intentionality into your work and it's important for it to be documented and shared properly... by the students who are impacted most, in their voice.
  2. Making Grading Fun Again: You'll be surprised, encouraged, and sometimes brought to tears by what you will hear.
  3. Parents Share: every parent loves seeing and hearing their child share their learning. It encourages and empowers both groups, which directly improves your class and school community.

Background Context:

After iterating over 5k times with students on the Personal Reflection process I found a new, simpler process during Chicago Summer Stories (with both Middle School and High School students) that was so easy that I needed to share it.

Capturing video while having a student conversation provides a more human approach to assessment. Using an iPad or iPhone camera the teacher captures the work as they ask about their process.

The Process:

  1. Open the Camera App and turn the device horizontally and hit record
  2. Stay within arms distance from the student to capture strong audio
  3. Have the student introduce the project, "Can you describe what project/lab/assignment we're working on here?"
  4. Focus follow up questions on "What you did and What you learned"
  5. Airdrop the video to the student
  6. In iMovie or Final Cut Pro students edit their responses, cutting out the teacher prompts and cleaning up the "ands & ums" to make it sound clean.
  7. Add project/process pictures and video to "show" rather than just tell the story
  8. Export your final video and share it

Reps, Reps, Reps: To make this your own you just have to do it and iterate to find the best way to authentically capture your student's work.

Prompts to ask:

  • Use leading prompts like "Describe, Explain, How did you..., Help me understand why"
  • Have the students re-phrase the question in their answer to help them with editing ie. "The work began with..."

More wins:

  1. AI Proof: there is nothing more authentic than a student sharing their own story about their unique process to their specific audience- you can't cheat that and...
  2. Student Engagement: Students will value the process as much as the product
  3. Your Evaluation process just got a lot easier too- demonstrating authentic learning in a variety of Domains.
  4. Your Board wants good news: Your Superintendent always wants good news to share and you'll be the humble hero sharing the dynamic learning happening in your classroom.

Great Job Steve. I am definitely going to include this portion into my video classes. I sometimes take stills to document the learning, but I have not recorded the process while asking questions of "how" and "why". I just acquired a SmallRig tablet mount, which will help me use my iPad to recored the magic that happens in class.
