Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2024 - learning shapes in Te Reo Māori

This post is the fourth  in a series of resources designed to support kaiako (teachers) during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Created by the talented educators at Rotorua Primary School, these resources are intended to benefit kaiako across Aotearoa.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori serves as a reminder of the significance of Te Reo Māori in New Zealand's cultural heritage, encouraging all New Zealanders to embrace and use the language in their daily lives.

Using Keynote to learn shapes in Te Reo

In this lesson, I created a Keynote and shared it via Classwork so I could track their progress (you could use Airdrop or Classroom).

Keynote allows students to learn about shapes in an engaging and interactive way. They can record their voices to practice sentences in Te Reo Māori and use shapes to creatively demonstrate their understanding. This multi-modal approach ensures that all students can actively participate, regardless of their learning style.

Simple Workflow:

  1. Introduce Shapes: Start by introducing your students to basic shapes on the Keynote. Discuss their names in both English and Te Reo Māori.
  2. Record Sentences: Have your students record themselves saying sentences like “He tapawhā tēnei” (This is a square) or “E whā ngā tapa o te tapawhā” (The square has four sides). This helps reinforce both their math and language skills.
  3. Create a Picture: Encourage students to use the 2D shapes in Keynote to create their own pictures. They can combine different shapes to make something creative, like a house or a person.

Going Further:

To extend the activity, students can record themselves describing their pictures. They might talk about how many shapes they used or what they created. This not only helps with counting in Te Reo Māori but also with constructing more complex sentences.

You could also use the 3D shapes in the shape library.

This lesson is a great way to integrate Te Reo Māori into your math curriculum while making learning fun and accessible for all students. Download the resources now and get your class excited about both math and Te Reo!
