Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2024 - Creating your own whakapapa (family) in Pages.

This post is the fifth  in a series of resources designed to support kaiako (teachers) during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Created by the talented educators at Rotorua Primary School, these resources are intended to benefit kaiako across Aotearoa.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori serves as a reminder of the significance of Te Reo Māori in New Zealand's cultural heritage, encouraging all New Zealanders to embrace and use the language in their daily lives.

Creating Your Own Whakapapa with Pages 

Pages is an excellent tool for helping students create their own family tree (whakapapa) in Te Reo Māori. This activity not only teaches key vocabulary related to family relationships but also allows students to personalise their learning, such as adding audio directly to the template for practicing pronunciation. It's an engaging way to connect with your students and for them to connect with their whānau (family).

Lesson Workflow for Pages:

1. Share the Pages template via Classroom, Classwork, or Airdrop.
2. Model how to access Stickers through the emoji keyboard and create a Memoji of a family member (they could start with themselves).  
   
3. Drag the Memoji into the right place and type in their name.

 For older students who want to add more detail to their whakapapa, Freeform is a great alternative. You can make your own Memoji by going to the Media icon and opening Stickers (I've included a short "how to video" for you)
