Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2024 - Using Mark Up to create Clips movies in Math

Using Markup and Clips for Math and integratng Te Reo Learning

Markup is a fantastic tool for all ages, especially for our younger learners. It’s simple to use and helps tamariki (children) demonstrate their understanding of basic math concepts, while also integrating Te Reo Māori into the lesson.

In a recent lesson, I used Numicon to reinforce counting up to 10, but this activity can easily be adapted to any math tools your kura (school) uses. It’s also perfect for incorporating Te Reo, whether by adding Māori numbers or labelling shapes in Te Reo.

Lesson Workflow:

  1. Gather math tools like counters or Numicon.
  2. Take close-up photos of the tools.
  3. Use Markup to write numbers or words in Te Reo on the photos.
  4. Save the image

Going further with Clips

Why Use Clips? Clips is an excellent app for students to creatively express their learning. They can add their voices, practicing pronunciation in Te Reo as they explain what they’ve learned. This makes the activity both engaging and a great way to reinforce language skills. Working in pairs, students can build confidence in both math and Te Reo, enhancing their critical thinking and communication.

Here is my example you can share with your class:

This lesson also allows for easy differentiation, enabling students to explore various concepts and language skills based on their needs, such as shapes, fractions, or even colors and objects around the classroom

By combining Markup and Clips, you create an interactive and flexible learning experience that supports creativity, math understanding, and Te Reo learning
