This post is the third in a series of resources designed to support kaiako (teachers) during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Created by the talented educators at Rotorua Primary School, these resources are intended to benefit kaiako across Aotearoa.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori serves as a reminder of the significance of Te Reo Māori in New Zealand's cultural heritage, encouraging all New Zealanders to embrace and use the language in their daily lives.
Learning to Say How You Are Feeling in Te Reo
This resource is designed to teach your tamariki a few kupu (words) for feelings and encourage them to start a basic conversation with a friend. Keynote is an excellent tool for making learning accessible and inclusive for all levels of Reo. It allows tamariki to engage creatively and interactively, ensuring that every learner, regardless of their proficiency, can participate fully.
The activity promotes confidence and fluency in Te Reo by combining independent work with peer collaboration. Working with a buddy helps to build communication skills and reinforces learning in a supportive environment.
Basic Lesson Flow:
- Use the emoji keyboard to represent a feeling.
- Manipulate objects to learn basic sentence structure.
- Record themselves practicing the sentence structure.
- Video themselves having a conversation with a friend.
This resource fosters creativity and accessibility by encouraging tamariki to express their emotions visually and verbally, catering to diverse learning styles.
