With the holidays coming up, I worked with a bilingual 5th grade class on something fun while also teaching students skills and ways to create their own resources for themselves.
Introducing..... Santa Descriptors!
My colleague, a fellow ESL teacher, was asking for some coaching to help encourage her students to practice their speaking and building sentences. We came up with a two-part project.
First, students make a keynote with different slides dedicated to vocabulary words that center around the story of Santa Clause. For example, one slide was all about Santa's clothes, another with adjectives that fit with how Santa is described, and so on. I "started" the Keynote as a template but designed it to really be a model for students so that students could keep adding to it. This was very intentional so that students could get used to creating their own word bank of sorts.
Once students create their own word banks, they can start writing their own sentences to describe what Santa looks like, what are some of his behaviors, etc. so that students can make a script and do a "WANTED: SANTA CLAUSE" news broadcast in iMovie. This can absolutely be adapted to fit the needs of all students!
Happy Holidays!
