Using Ideogram AI to Generate Book Covers (for Amazon KDP and more)

Using Ideogram AI to Generate Book Covers for Amazon KDP

I recently have been exploring publishing some "low content" books on Amazon using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). I've been making some sermon note journals and have been using Ideogram.AI to generate the covers for the books. What fun, and what a time saver! Here are a few things I have learned about making book covers using Ideogram:

  • Ideogram has both free and paid options. As of 12/07/24, you are allowed to use the free commercially. The free option uses a slow generation, which can be VERY slow and sometimes is full so you have to wait. I found that the wait time is faster on very early mornings.
  • Ideogram free gives you 10 credits a day, which allows you 5 prompt generations of 4 images, for a total of 20 images a day.
  • I created covers in the 2 x 3 size, which fit perfectly for a 6 x 9 book cover.
  • Ideogram does a much better job with accurately creating text than the other generators that I have tried. If the text looked slightly off, I would remix the design to see if the lettering would improve.
  • For each cover style, I generated and remixed about 20 covers, so I could pick the best design. I thought Ideogram generated many beautiful designs that I could use! (See examples above.) Many designs needed a bit of editing to remove sight flaws, which I did using Apple's AI erase feature in Photos or using Procreate to color over various spots.
  • I also tried to create a similar small image that I could use to decorate the back cover.
  • You can learn more about some other ways to use Ideogram in the classroom in this Apple Education Community post: https://education.apple.com/story/250012733

Teachers might have many different ways to use similar AI created book covers in their classroom. It can be a real time saver, and can be helpful to spark creative ideas! If you have a way that you might use an AI generated cover in the classroom , I would love for you to share it in the comments.
