Manage Your Class with iPad and Mac

 Manage Your Class with iPad

In our Apple Professional Learning Live session, we explored how the Classroom app can help educators guide students through lessons, keep them focused on the task at hand, and easily share learning resources.

Here’s a recap on each of the experiences and some resources for you to take your learning further.

Getting Started with Classroom

Only teachers require the app on their iPad or Mac. Students can access the classroom via the share code that the teacher gets when they create a class.

Students enter the class code in the settings app on their Mac or iPad.

Showcasing Student Work

One of the great features of Apple Classroom is being able to easily view and showcase student work. Teachers can easily select a student in Classroom and either view their screen privately or Airplay it directly to a display.

If the teacher already has their iPad on Airplay then simply viewing a student device will allow the class to see it.

Check out this article on 4 Tiers of Showcasing Students Work.

Focus Student Learning

During the workshop we looked at some ways that we could use Classroom to lock students into an App or to lock certain devices around the room to focus students back on the teacher.

Lock Devices

Teachers can lock single students, groups of students or the whole class in one go. Simply select the student or group and click the padlock on the top right of the screen. For more information check out the guide linked below.

Lock in App After Opening.

Teachers can open specific apps on all student devices or on just a group that they have created. This is fantastic for locking students into iMovie or Keynote or any app that you want them to concentrate on.

Navigate

The Navigate option allows a teacher to direct students to a particular book in Books or navigate to a web site in Safari that the teacher has in their Favourites, or Reading List. For instructions on how to use Navigate, check out the guide linked below.

This guide from Apple has all you will need to get started and learn about locking devices or locking in certain apps, or using navigate. Just remember to “End the Class” or unlock the apps before sending students on their way.

Save Time & Focus Teaching

This part of the webinar focused on creating groups or using some of the auto created groups built into Classroom. There is a great guide on the Apple support site that covers this in detail.

Other resources

A teacher Trudy Fausett has created a Padlet on Classroom with some great ideas.

An Educator Jacob Woolcock has compiled a series of videos on using and getting the best from Classroom.
