Harnessing the Freeform App for Dynamic Digital Learning

CoAuthor - @ParkerSmith

Students in our district are gaining confidence in using creation tools available throughout Apple's native applications utilizing Keynote templates created by @TechZ. Now, it's time to take their learning to the next level with the Freeform App! Discover new ways to create interactive, multi-media-rich learning experiences that captivate and engage. Using Freeform, students can engage independently or collaboratively in real-time, from group brainstorming activities to digital station rotations.

Activity Timeline:

Prep- A Freeform board can be a fantastic tool for collaborative unit practice, entrance/exit tickets, flipped classroom model activities, digital station rotation, unlimited note-taking/creation spaces, and so much more! To start, teachers can create a board with spaces for whole group learning, small group learning, or individual learning using locked shapes and text boxes. Some activities may include imported pictures, videos, documents, web links, and other media. The possibilities are endless! See below for example boards:

Structured Literacy Daily Practice (Students zoom in to their individual practice board and drag letter tiles into the elkonin boxes to form words. The board can be screen mirrored to a classroom display to share work.)

1st Grade Math Quick Practice (Students work in pairs using the drawing tools to show numbers in base ten block notation.)

You can even use a board to present content at staff meetings! Set up digital station rotation spaces including sections with different forms of media (video, photo, audio recording, document, web link, etc.).

Collaborate with entrance/exit tickets (Students drag a pre-added shape from a pile into the open space and share a response to a question by double tapping the shape to type in it.)
Share the Board- Teachers can share a Freeform board with a collaborative link or by creating a QR code with the Shortcuts app. Freeform boards can also be sent as view-only copies. Collaboration settings can be changed at any time using the "Manage Shared Board" option. Students can utilize a variety of tools on every board, including Media Tools, Drawing Tools, Shape Tools, and Sticky Note/Text Tools. Student work can be seen by peers in real-time when collaborating, and teachers can also screen mirror to show the board on a classroom display.

Step-by-step instructions for sharing a collaborative Freeform board are linked to this post as an attachment.

Happy Creating!
