Learning with iPad - Let Me Show You Around!

Context

This activity combines real-world communication with descriptive and persuasive writing. Students write an email to a foreign friend, recommending a place in Singapore to visit. It encourages them to express personal opinions, share cultural knowledge, and organise ideas clearly, all while using an authentic writing format. This builds both writing confidence and audience awareness in a meaningful way.

Preparation & Flow

1. Class Brainstorm

Start with a discussion

“If your friend came to Singapore, where would you take them?”

List examples with reasons.

2. Choose a Place

Each student picks one place in Singapore they enjoy or find interesting.

3. Plan the Email

Use guiding questions to outline:

What is the place?

Why is it special?

What can someone do there?

When is the best time to go?

Who would enjoy it?

4. Write the Email

Using Pages or Google Docs, students draft a friendly, persuasive email.

Include a subject line, greeting, body, and closing.

5. Peer Review & Share

Students exchange emails and give kind feedback. What stood out? What could be improved?
