Introducing iPads to Young Learners

When young learners first get their hands on an iPad, it’s easy for them to think of it mainly as a device for games or videos. But with the right introduction, iPads can quickly become tools for creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression.

I’ve been exploring ways to set this tone right from day one. One of my go-to approaches is to keep it simple and start with the Camera app paired with Markup.

Students take their own photos, then use Markup to draw and personalise them. It’s a quick win that builds confidence and independence, while reinforcing the idea that iPads are for creating, not just consuming.

I’ve put together a short video that walks through this first lesson step by step - perfect for teachers introducing iPads in Years 1–2 (or any group that’s new to the devices).
