Tap into students creativity while learning about Hispanic Heritage month by creating their own papel picado to express themselves with these two activities in Keynote. The overall goal of the lesson is for students to better understand Hispanic Heritage and connect their new learning in their own way. When students create their own papel picado you can have them all gathered together to see how each person is unique! I chose this project to highlight the power of two dimensional shapes and how they can be applied in real life situations. To create this project, I started with a white blank page. I added a square and changed the color of the square to a bright color. Then the fun begins - you can choose any shape from the Keynote library to create a personalized look. Some of my favorites are the circle, triangle, rhombus and cactus! I would even have students write about their papel picado and do a gallery walk to view each others. Another way to do this activity would be to use layering and drawing tools to design a papel picado. Put a twist on this Reveal a Constellation project by using this downloadable template from Creative Activities for Early Learners.
How could these activities be used with your students? What are some ways you celebrate Hispanic Heritage in your classroom?
