Snap, Annotate, Analyze: Character Traits in Action

In this lesson, students explore character analysis by using the Photos app to identify and annotate a character’s internal and external traits. After a brief teacher-led review of trait types and how authors reveal them, students choose a character from their reading and take a photo of an illustration or page representing that character.

Using the Photos app, they select the photo they just took, tap the edit icon, and choose the markup tool to annotate it. Following the teacher’s guidance, students highlight or circle text, draw shapes, write notes, or add other labels to identify internal and external traits. Their annotations show how the character’s traits influence their choices, reactions, and role in the story.

To extend learning, students can share their annotated photos with peers, compare interpretations, and discuss the evidence behind their choices. This activity strengthens comprehension while giving students hands-on experience using iPad tools to demonstrate learning.

Hi Kris

I really like how you’ve used Markup to help students make their thinking visible. The mix of identifying traits, annotating evidence and comparing ideas gives them a clear way to understand the nuances of character. If time allowed, students could record a quick explanation of their annotations, sharing how the evidence supports the trait they chose...
