3D Printed Cookie Cutters

🍪 New STEM Teacher, New Tech, and the Sweet Smell of Success! 🍪

I wanted to share some exciting news and a cool project happening in one of my buildings that perfectly blends STEM, creativity, and real-world application—the kind of learning we all strive for!

We recently welcomed a passionate new STEM teacher, and we are incredibly fortunate to have had two 3D printers donated by our local Toyota plant. They had been sitting, barely used, but that's about to change!

The new teacher was eager to get the printers running immediately, and while we initially considered standard projects like keychains or name tags, we wanted something that would truly wow the students and connect to a relatable, everyday concept.

Thanks to a quick brainstorming session (with a little help from ChatGPT!), we landed on the perfect design challenge:

Student-Designed Cookie Cutters!

  • Grades 3, 4, and 5 are diving into Tinkercad to conceptualize and design their very own, unique cookie cutters.
  • The designs are then being sent to our 3D printers to be manufactured. This provides an immediate, tangible result of their CAD work.

But wait, there's more!

Next week, we are taking this project one step further by partnering with our incredible cafeteria staff. Students will get to use their custom-designed tools to roll out dough, cut shapes, and then bake their creations!

I am so excited for this real-world learning opportunity that connects digital design, manufacturing, and collaboration. It's truly a delicious example of how powerful hands-on STEM can be!

Students helping each other be sure that their design with print successfully!
