Level Up Your Animation with Magic Move in Keynote – Bring a Video Game Moment to Life

Level up your animation and create a short side‑scrolling video game scene in Keynote! This quick project uses Magic Move to animate a character 👾 moving through a level, collecting an item 🍒, and reaching a goal. It’s an easy way for students to explore movement, sequencing, and visual storytelling using emojis and simple shapes.

Using the purple character emoji as the “player,” I built an 8‑slide side‑scrolling animation where the Magic Move slide animation does all the work - gliding the character 👾 across the screen, revealing a collectible cherry 🍒, and guiding them to the finish flag. 🏁

To keep the animation smooth, each new moment is created by duplicating the previous slide and adjusting the character’s position before applying Magic Move.

👾 Level 1: Start!

Slide 1 - The purple character begins on the left side of the screen, ready to start the level. Click on the slide, then click animate, add transition, then Magic Move.

Duplicate this slide to build the next moment. The Magic Move animation will carry over into the duplicate.

🍒 Collecting Energy

On the duplicated slide, move the character toward the center and add a cherry for energy. Duplicate the slide again, and move the character up to the cherry. Magic Move animates the movement so it feels like a game action.

 🏁 Reaching the Goal

Duplicate again, add a checkered flag as the finish point, and move the character toward the right side, passing the flag.

⭐️ Level Complete!

On the final duplicated slide, center the character and add “Level 1: Complete!” with five stars to celebrate the win.

✨ Tips for a Smoother Animation

  • Slow down the Magic Move duration for a more game‑like feel
  • Keep movements small between slides for cleaner transitions
  • Duplicate slides instead of starting new ones to keep everything aligned
  • Emojis make great characters, items, and power‑ups!
  • Export your Keynote as an Animated GIF so you can easily share your finished level anywhere

This “Level 1” animation is a fun way for students to learn how to show movement and tell a simple story in Keynote. By duplicating slides and using the Magic Move transition, they can make a character travel through a level, collect items, and reach a goal. Magic Move is also useful far beyond video‑game scenes. It can help students model steps in a science process, show before‑and‑after changes, build timelines, or create short visual stories. It’s a flexible tool that can help students show movement and change in almost any project they create.
