Movement Map: An Introduction to Rhythm

How can music shape the way we move?

This is an integrated lesson that will engage students' inner rhythm while designing a movement map to the music of "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy". Students explore how timing, tempo, and pattern create the foundation of dance and coordinated movement.

Rhythm is not only the heart in music, it is also experienced through movement .

Subjects Integrated: Physical Education, Music, and Performing Arts

Before the lesson

Begin by demonstrating moving OFF beat and moving ON the beat. Allow students to feel the difference and examine what kind of exercise matches the sound (smooth, sharp, fast, and light).

Practice simple movements together while counting to the beat:

  • crawls in slow 4 counts
  • hops in fast 8 counts
  • tiptoe walks in 16 fast counts

Creating the Movement Map in Pages (best to work in groups of 3)
