Designing for Impact: An Interdisciplinary PBL Unit Integrating Filipino Language, Environmental Science, and Digital Creativity for Grade 6

How can Grade 6 students use research, storytelling, and digital creation to respond to real-world environmental issues in their communities?

This interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit brought together Filipino Language, Science, and Computer subjects through an authentic challenge centered on flooding and environmental sustainability. Designed for Grade 6 students, the unit guided learners through a design-thinking process where they investigated local environmental concerns, conducted Filipino-language research, and created multimedia outputs using Apple tools to communicate solutions and reflections.

The Driving Question

“How can we better understand and communicate solutions to flooding and environmental issues in our community?”

The project challenged students to move beyond textbook learning and engage with a problem they experience directly during typhoon season and periods of heavy rainfall. Students explored the causes and effects of flooding, researched environmental practices, and developed digital artifacts that documented both their learning process and proposed solutions.

 


Filipino Language and Literacy Through Research

In the Filipino Language component, Grade 6 students strengthened literacy and communication skills through authentic research tasks conducted primarily in Filipino. Learners gathered information from news articles, interviews, community narratives, and online resources discussing environmental issues and flooding in their local areas.

Students practiced:

  • Pananaliksik at pangangalap ng impormasyon
  • Pagsusuri ng mapagkakatiwalaang sanggunian
  • Pagbubuod at pagsasalin ng impormasyon
  • Pagsasagawa ng panayam at dokumentasyon
  • Akademikong pagsulat sa Filipino
  • Replektibong komunikasyon at presentasyon

Using Filipino as the primary language of inquiry allowed students to connect learning more deeply to their culture, lived experiences, and local communities. It also reinforced the idea that language is a powerful tool for advocacy, storytelling, and civic awareness.

Science Connections: Environmental Issues and Flooding

In Science, students investigated:

  • Causes of flooding
  • Improper waste management
  • Urbanization and drainage systems
  • Climate and weather patterns
  • Community-based environmental solutions

Rather than focusing only on theoretical understanding, students analyzed local examples and connected scientific concepts to their lived experiences. Many students documented flood-prone areas near their homes or schools and discussed how environmental practices contribute to recurring issues.

 

This real-world relevance increased student engagement and gave scientific inquiry a stronger sense of purpose.

Integrating Design Thinking

The unit was structured around a design-thinking process that encouraged empathy, inquiry, creativity, and iteration.

Students moved through stages such as:

  1. Empathize: Understanding how flooding affects families and communities
  2. Define: Identifying specific environmental problems observed locally
  3. Ideate: Brainstorming realistic and community-centered solutions
  4. Prototype: Creating digital presentations, campaigns, and portfolios
  5. Share and Reflect: Presenting outputs and evaluating the effectiveness of their ideas

 

This process helped students develop problem-solving skills while reinforcing collaboration and reflection throughout the project.

Using Apple Tools for Creative Learning

Pages for E-Portfolios

Students used Pages to build digital e-portfolios documenting their research, reflections, interviews, images, and project progress.

The multimodal features of Pages allowed students to combine:

  • Written reflections
  • Photos and diagrams
  • Embedded videos
  • Audio recordings
  • Research documentation

 

The e-portfolio became both a process journal and a final showcase of learning.

Video Editing for Awareness Campaigns

Students created short awareness videos highlighting environmental issues and possible solutions within their communities. Video editing allowed learners to communicate scientific concepts and social concerns in more engaging and accessible formats.

 

These outputs encouraged students to think critically about how media can influence awareness and action.

Keynote Animation for Interactive Presentations

Using Keynote, students designed animated presentations to explain research findings, visualize flooding scenarios, and present proposed environmental solutions.

Animations and transitions helped students:

  • Simplify complex scientific ideas
  • Create more engaging presentations
  • Visualize systems and processes
  • Improve storytelling and audience engagement

Students became more intentional in how they communicated information visually and verbally.

Why This Matters

This interdisciplinary project demonstrated that authentic learning becomes more powerful when students are asked to solve meaningful problems connected to their communities.

Instead of learning subjects in isolation, Grade 6 students experienced how Filipino Language, Science, and Technology intersect in the real world. They researched, designed, created, reflected, and communicated using tools that supported both creativity and critical thinking.

More importantly, students developed agency. They were not simply studying environmental issues. They were investigating them, documenting them, and proposing solutions through purposeful digital creation.

Final Reflection

Project-Based Learning becomes more meaningful when students are given opportunities to create work that connects directly to their lives and communities. By integrating Filipino Language, environmental science, and digital creativity through Apple tools, this Grade 6 interdisciplinary unit transformed students from passive learners into active problem-solvers and communicators.

Technology was not used simply for presentation. It became a platform for inquiry, reflection, collaboration, and authentic expression.
