Crack the Ionic Code: Building Chemical Formulae with iPad

Crack the Ionic Code is designed for Form 4 Chemistry KSSM Dual Language Programme, specifically Topic 3.3: Chemical Formula, with a focus on constructing chemical formulae of ionic compounds.

Constructing chemical formulae can be challenging when students experience the process mainly as a set of rules to remember. I wanted my students to see how the charges of cations and anions determine the ratio of ions in a compound and give them space to discover this relationship through exploration. This led me to create Crack the Ionic Code, a 60-minute, puzzle-based Chemistry lesson designed around iPad.

The lesson follows the 5E Learning Model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. A Pages file serves as the students’ digital learning guide throughout the lesson that will allow students to observe, manipulate, discuss and record their ideas as they progress through the activities.

The lesson begins with a short animation created in Keynote. Students watch cations and anions move together to form compounds such as NaCl, MgCl₂, Na₂O and Al₂O₃. Students study the different combinations and respond to guiding questions about the patterns they notice.

Students then move into the main activity, Ionic Puzzle: Find the Perfect Match. Using digital ion puzzle pieces, they combine cations and anions until the pieces fit together. From each completed puzzle, students determine the simplest ratio of ions before writing the chemical formula and name of the compound. The puzzle provides a visual connection between ionic charges, ion ratios and the subscripts used in chemical formulae.

During the Explain phase, students participate in a gallery walk to view their classmates’ solutions. They compare ion combinations, chemical formulae and compound names while discussing the reasoning behind each answer. The class uses these observations to establish how ions combine in ratios that produce an electrically neutral compound.

Students apply their understanding to new ion combinations during the Elaborate phase. They use the patterns discovered through the puzzle activity to construct and name ionic compounds independently.

For the Evaluate phase, students complete a personal exit-ticket reflection. Using the Record Audio feature in Pages, they create a 30–45 second voice recording describing what they learned, explaining how they determine the ratio of cations and anions, giving an example of an ionic compound with its formula, and sharing which part of the activity supported their learning.

Throughout the lesson, iPad supports students as they explore and communicate Chemistry through animation, digital manipulatives, peer discussion and voice reflection.
